Técnicas para Pintar con Espátula

The Technique for Painting with a Spatula

The spatula technique is a painting technique that consists of applying paint to the canvas (acrylic or oil) using spatulas and palette knives. It is very popular in the art world and you can create different urban landscapes, natural landscapes, abstract portraits and more. To paint with a spatula, it is recommended to use a spatula with a blade that is flexible enough for easy application. Try to apply only the paint you are going to use on the palette and start by applying little paint with the spatula and distribute the tones on the support but not in large quantities. To start painting, always start from the background towards the closest part of the image. Paint from light to dark to avoid colors from smudging. Do the entire work in one day so that the wet-on-wet technique works correctly.

Some Artists Who Used This Technique

Some of the artists who used the palette knife technique are Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, and Krista Schumacher.

  • Vincent van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter who created swirling textures with lots of oil paint and different-shaped palette knives. Famous works include The Starry Night, Sunflowers, and The Bedroom in Arles.

  • Marc Chagall was a surrealist painter who used the palette knife to create light and transparency effects. Famous works include I and the Village, The Bride, and The Green Violinist.
